Global dance and electronica reviews

JAZZANOVA

Sounds From The Underground

"When we go to places like Kazakhstan where nobody ever, ever goes, we’re mobbed like The Beatles because they’re so pleased someone’s turned up to play there!”
TRANS-GLOBAL UNDERGROUND’s HAMILTON LEE
tells Andrew Tuttle. Click on the image for the full story...
Didgeridoo Trance Dance DVD (Music Mosaic)
The promo says "A taste of Australia – space out, trip out, have a party!" (!!??) I must admit something about the packaging and the by-line made me cautious and prevented this release from ever making it into my DVD player until now. The mere title suggested I be running for earplugs. I am afraid in this instance I did well to judge the book by its cover... read the full review by clicking on the image
Navdeep - Yaathra
For years this thing they call asian underground has been dominated by the eclecticism of tabla'n'bass. Coffee table music for you to impress your friends with, made by cats who grew up listening to Marley, Shankar and (then) Kraftwerk. Cool ji, but where is KRS1, Nusrat or Goldie?
Well, most of us are still busy growing up, but the first results are starting to come through. Lux Ratnamohan finds a soundscape for life... (click on the CD for a full review)
Evolutionary Vibes Series -The Winter Of Our Discotheque (Creative Vibes)
Reviewed by Aaron Sines

The latest instalment of the Evolutionary Vibes Series -The Winter Of Our Discotheque contains a wealth of contemporary Australian treats compiled by those music lovers in the Creative Vibes crew. This diverse compilation showcases some of this country's most notable emerging talent including Koolism, The Bird and Maya Jupiter. In contrast to the plethora of dance compilations that exist in the market today, Evolutionary Vibes is a jouney into emerging styles of electronica, drawing on the influences of urban hip-hop and trip-hop through to the more melodic vibes of chillout dub and ambient soundscape. This adventurous project will have something to offer most listeners and provides an interesting snapshot of the undercurrent of Australian electronic music.

Longrain Music 2 - Various (Instinctive Travels)

Instinctive Travels have delivered the second instalment of funky-latin infused dance beats and soulful breaks with their outstanding compilation Longrain Music 2. Guaranteed to please the ears of the most discerning of listeners, this oustanding compilation breezes through a selection of cuts from a diverse range of artists. Longrain Music 2 takes us on a colourful journey around the world as it effortlessly crosses from the jazzy latin vibe of SHQ - Cubano Chant and Zimpala - The Breeze Is Back through to the afro funk sounds of Mo' Horizons - Gonna Be and Rephrase before finally settling into the more dubby soulful groove of Deepchild, Tag and Emo. This diverse bag is worthy of special mention, thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end.

Buddha Cafe - Various (Intentcity Records)

At first glance I was sure that this "exotic collection where east meets west" would be the firm favourite of any chardonnay sipping hippie who has run away to Byron Bay to work though their mid life crisis. While I still believe that to be true, I must confess that I was pleasantly suprised by the calibre of artists featured in this compilation. Featuring the likes of Govinda, Lotus, Ikarus and Omar Faruk, Buddha Cafe is a slick production that blends the sounds of chillout and downtempo electronica with a hint of eastern instrumentation and vocal performance. Continuing in the tradition of "chillout" compilations Buddha Cafe is not venturing too far into unfamilar territory although it will certainly have an appeal to devotees of the genre.

Mo' Horizons And The New Bohemian -Freedom (Stereo Deluxe)
Mo' Horizons is the German DJ/Producer duo Ralf Droesemeyer and Mark Wetzler. The latest creation from this pair draws on everything from Jazz, Afro, Latin, Boogaloo, Soul, Dub and Funk and is performed by a large family of live muscians, percussionists and vocalists. Mo' Horizons have been steadily building on their success over a number years and this project is by far the most adventurous in both size and vision. The high standard of production in this work is equally matched by the refined muscianship of the performers and the end result is a very enjoyable blend of world inflected beats and smooth cafe grooves.
