di`as´po`ra
the dispersion or spreading
of a people or language or culture that was originally localized;
any people or ethnic population forced or induced to leave their
traditional ethnic homelands, being dispersed throughout other
parts of the world, and the ensuing developments in their dispersal
and culture.
Australia's dedicated
portal for world, Latin, African, Caribbean, Reggae, Eastern,
Brazilian, Blues, Indigenous and Local independent musical culture.
Diaspora World
Beat was founded in 1999
by Cristina Dio and Richard Jasiutowicz to fill a void left by
the mainstream media. Initially a print magazine, Diaspora World
Beat was released quarterly with pertinent articles and reviews
balancing international and local "world music" artists,
releases and events. Today, Diaspora is an online e-zine, still
the only world beat publication in Australia and steadily becoming
one of the most comprehensive world music information resources
on the web.
In September 2004, diaspora.com.au was listed by ScreenSound Australia,
the National Screen and Sound Archive as a publication of important
cultural significance and continues to strive for critical and
current discussion on world music and associated cultural issues.
Diaspora
is fed by a loose collective of contributing volunteers - writers,
photographers, journalists and artists who give energy and their
flavour to the site. The founders Cristina and Richard welcome
feedback and contribution from anywhere in the world and from
any genre of music or the arts.
