With its chantical vocals and distinctive accordion-based
sound coupled with violins and driving percussion Sudanese music
could certainly not be confused with anything else. Even though
most of the material on "Hossan Ramzy Presents Azza- Music
From Sudan" (ARC) which is performed by bongo-player Hassouna
Bangladish and his group was composed in the 20s and 30s and features
traditional instrumentation apart from the bass guitar, the consistently
pumping beat and in the pocket call and response gives the whole
record an ancient-yet-contemporary air. When you consider that
the percussionist who plays with such finesse and timing in sympathy
with the tabla and doballa of his father Magdy, was only 8 ½
years old at the time of recording, the accelerating, modulated
beats seem even more impressive.
