The links between the tradition and today are
subsumed to the throbbing intensity of the music which seems to
have chosen for its elasticity. Names such as Kasse Mady Diabate,
Oumou Sangare, Toumani Diabate, Habib Koite, Ali Farka Toure,
Rokia Traore and Super Rail Band are world renowned and each of
their contributions is a cracker while at the same time reasonably
obscure so only the most fanatical collector of their work is
likely to have most of them. Yet the contributions from lesser
known artists who cover a range of traditional rhythms, rap, balladry,
blues and classical praise music are equally as stunning and add
a further layer to the Mali story. And even at its most contemporary
fervour Mali Lolo never resorts to electronic gimmickry. It remains
true to its own muse. Ignore at your peril.
