Caetano Veloso's long and successful career
composing for the cinema started in the 1960's and has brought
him a number of hit records. In this his first collaboration with
Diegues, Caetano Veloso achieves his broadest and most complete
soundtrack, creating some two hours of music, including the songs,
which combine perfectly with the spirit of the images and the
characters.
Even while writing the screenplay for Tieta do Agreste, Carlos
Diegues was preparing the musical concept for the film. Veloso's
soundtrack, largely inspired by the music of the region, met all
his expectations. The main part of the score brings together Dida
- the female part of the group Olodum - and Jacques Morelenbaum's
chord arrangements. Diegues had also pinpointed certain scenes
for which Veloso produced seven wonderful songs, one of which
is sung by Diegues's own 8-year old daughter, Flora.
