The latino compilations just keep on getting groovier and groovier.
This one, divided into el restaurante and el club with plenty
of swinging swapping between the two sits on the cusp of funky,
cool Brazilian, updated boogaloo, Cuban rumba and cha cha cha,
soul, mambo, jazz and remixed sounds with a couple of classics
like Tito’s Hit The Bongo thrown in for good measure.
Unlike many of the ilk Latina percolates naturally
so that any number of tropical genres slide in, between and out
of the trippy trappings with genuine emotion and rhythm. It helps
no end to have brilliant entries by Trio Mocoto and Marcos Valle
as well as by a host of artists like Jack Costanzo (his clubland
version of Celia’s classic Quimbara jumps like a percolator
boiling acid) , Joao Bosco and others. Many were pulsing the ether
long before anyone conceived of faxing in performances.
This double CD succeeds where many have failed
by simply making sure that all the right nuts and bolts are in
place with great singers and musicians given centre stage. When
you go to open your shop in the mall, put this one on. You’ll
have the coolest patisserie around. Guaranteed.
