With the classic Argentinian line-up of
piano, double bass, violin and accordeon (no bandoneon), a wealth
of experience in the classical and jazz genres and a palpable
passion for the music from the Cono Sur Tango Siempre would fool
many an Argentinian in a blindfold test. Starting with a classic
Canaro/D’Arriollo composition “Silueta Portena”
that is sprightly, moving and virtuosic, the quartet performs
a number of classic tango pieces as well as original compositions
by leader/accordionist Pete Rosser, a skilful rearrangement or
Igor Stravinsky’s “Tango” and closes with the
haunting “Allegro Tangabile” by Astor Piazzolla. That
feeling that the house of cards is about to collapse (but never
does) is ever present throughout “Nocturno”. Some
of your Argentinian (or Uruguayan) friends might find it hard
to believe that these two ladies and two gentlemen hail from the
UK, especially if you inform them after they’ve heard them.
