“En El Alma De Los Andes” is
a collection of original Bolivian recordings by this octet which
includes performers on panflutes, charango, quena flutes, percussion
and vocals. There has been a tendency over the years for some
to denigrate Andean music in their quest for something more earthy.
It was the first South American style to
make an international splash more than two decades after Carmen
Miranda’s Brazilian samba, and so much more is known now,
so it’s easy to be cynical. What I do know is that this
is a damned fine record, that like all good examples of the genre
is melodious without being anodyne and has a genuine universal
appeal.
The modern production is warm and enhances
the soaring flutes, melodies, vocal harmonies and the genuine
emotions of these talented performers. The last track “Fiesta
Andina” is a very interesting departure, a traditional dance
number that reverberates with archaic rhythms and the patina of
pre-Columbian traditions. RJ
