The release of Dha’s self-titled new
album heralds a new wave in Eastern fusion music for Australia.
Exploring the unique cross over of powerhouse percussive music
laced with traditional Indian sounds and western grooves and rhythms,
Dha is an eastern fusion ensemble that blurs all boundaries, casting
a haunting yet uplifting spell on audiences.
Since their formation in 1999 Dha has thrilled their audiences
at world music festivals such as: Bellingen Global Carnival, Woodford
Folk Festival, Carnivalé, and the Asian Music Festival
at the Sydney Opera House. The Dha collective consists of some
of the most renowned Australian musical innovators, specialists
in a variety of fields. The Singh brothers (Bobby on Tabla and
Sukhi on vocals), who lead the group, are both internationally
renowned as leading classical Indian musicians.
Bobby Singh is a musician occupying a rare and privileged position
between classical and cutting edge contemporary musical forms,
often collaborating with electronic artists, infusing and twisting
Eastern influences into current sounds. Dha is a tribute to this
cross pollination. Dha also features Ben Walsh, best known for
his work with live electronic outfit The Bird and junk percussion
group Pablo Percusso; Cleis Pierce, known for her beautiful violin
contributes to Coolangubra and Kev Carmody; Greg Sheehan, a renowned
percussionist who formed the innovative Utungan Percussion and
recently toured Ireland with the Hot Hothouse Flowers; and Barry
Hill, who has performed with members of the Pan African Orchestra
in Ghana, performed with Jim Kelly’s Jazz Trio and is currently
completing the 3rd CD with his trio Amphibian.
Dha’s new self-titled album, funded by the Australian Institute
of Eastern Music, is released by the label Cross Pollination,
and distributed by Vitamin Records.
