Double T are a duo consisting of Yuri Terletski on acoustic guitar
and Anatoli Torjinski on cello. I placed their excellent debut
Beyond The Circle at the top of the list of Australian
world music in the critics pick of 2001. If anything Ad
Infinitum takes the creative direction of the group even
further with the addition of Bobby Singh on tablas and the vocals
of Caroline Lynn. All the titles were composed by the duo and
cover a broad range, hinting at everything from pop, gypsy swing,
Middle Eastern, funk, flamenco, classical to jazz.
The compositions are simply wonderful, melodious, quirky and multi-dimensional
then suddenly deep and quizzically sombre calling to mind the
music of Nuevo Tango master Astor Piazzolla. Indeed their Tango
Man is a breathtaking tribute to the man himself full of
that sense of danger that only master musicians can create. Caroline
Lynn was an inspired choice adding another layer to the mix with
emotionally apposite scat and soaring vocals that complement the
music perfectly. Also the interplay between Yuri and Anatoli seem
to have acquired a balance that wasnt always there on their
debut.
The guitarist moves from tranquil beauty to exciting flurries
of notes that always mirror the emotional design of the songs,
as does the cellist ranging from indescribable longing to dense
pizzicatos that slash the mind as well as the strings. Bobby Singhs
tabla playing adds another level of excitement to the proceedings,
fitting in as if he had been playing with the duo for years. Just
listen to not only his dazzlingly fast interplay on the title
track Ad Infinitum but also also his subtle modulation
of intensity. Awesome. Its a pity he and Caroline cant
remain members on a more permanent basis as they add other possibilities
to the music of this great duo.
