Kutcha Edwards is an indigenous
singer/songwriter whose songs sing of the struggles suffered and
lessons learned from his experiences as an urban aborigine. Mainly
produced by Paul Kelly, his latest album Cooinda (Shock)
could be loosely described as country with rock and gospel
overtones. Kutcha wrote or co-wrote the songs and lyrics for the
album except for an excellent version of Paul Simon's Mother
& Child Reunion, an echo perhaps of Kutcha's own experiences
as one of the stolen generation.
All the songs are outstanding. Kutcha
is an extremely gifted song-writer with a real elegiac sense of
melody and a warm, sincere voice. He has mapped out his own little
world here full of bittersweet, poetic memories.July 2003
