The influence of reggae, dub and a few selected
seconds from the careers of George Clinton and James Brown form
the basis of much of what you're likely to hear in conventional
clubland today, especially here in Australia. If you scratch the
surface though you can hear all manner of creative dance friendly
electronica being produced. Unfortunately that's not the case
on Sound System's Version Excursion (Sound System),
a compilation featuring groups such as XU1, The Porkers, Bored
Of Education, The Allniters, The Mad Dash and Backy Skank,
produced by Peter Cooper & Damian Condusso.
The use of dub techniques to highlight the bleeding
obvious and a rinky-dinky approach to reggae rhythms do not make
for enlightening music although, to be fair you can jump to this
so long as you put your ears and mind into neutral. I'm afraid
though that no amount of clever cutting and pasting or artificially
produced propulsion can cover up the lame bass-lines or lack of
musical skill and imagination demonstrated here. July 2003
