That is certainly the way she is being
promoted. Whatever
her Arc Music release Hossam Ramzy
Presents Dalinda reflects a wide array of influences from
French chanson, Balkan music, latin, reggae and modern dance beats
to rai, Egyptian and other oriental styles. There's even a charming
reinterpretation of Congolese rumba cum world pop via Egypt, the
brief Blue which closes the album.
Brimming with knockout arrangements from
the Sultan Of Swing, Egyptian percussionist Hossam Ramzy
(see the review of the brilliant Flamenco Arabe in the
Review section) you can rest assured that a rich tapestry that
ranges from traditional plaintiff ney (flute), zither and sweeping
North African string sounds to a dizzying but always in-the-pocket
array of modern rhythms and colours is purveyed. While this 11
song release couldn't be viewed as anything other than accessible
oriental pop, the themes are consistently memorable and multi-layered
(the lovely ballad Yaah seems to creep up on my mind at
odd moments). In addition Dalinda handles everything with
a sultry deftness that illuminates each song. On some world-pop
music records the disparateness of cultural sources can seem schizophrenic.
That is never the case on this charming release. RJ July 2003
