Although it still sounds like dub to me
I
mean it skanks like crazy with all manner of electronic effects,
instrumental colours, JA Djing and reggae singers feeding the
flow
this futuristic production brings many elements into
the aural foreground without sacrificing subtlety. As a result
a lot of these dubs might even work on the contemporary dancefloor
especially
the opener Professor Oz's Waves and Sun where the insistent driving
skank drifts into some lovely flute colours.
There's some pretty legendary names involved
here
Big Youth in particular who is given a fat dance beat
to alternate with the reggae one
.or Cutty Rank's The Stopper
where the chatter is tamed by the manic insistence of his surroundings.
Other contributors are Scientist, Bouzou Bajou, Submission, Stereotyp,
Nick Holder and Thievery Corporation.
My favourite is the final Brothers and Sisters
by Butch Cassidy Sound System, stimulating dub featuring the unmistakable
voice of Third World's Bunny Rugs, one of Jamaica's greatest singers.
While followers of the old school might find some of the manipulations
a bit too obvious there is certainly a lot to admire. However
I do find it extremely off-putting having to go online to check
the sources. At time of writing excessive traffic prevented me
from accessing the internet. More information please on the covers.
The review stands as it is.
