the dub revolutionaries - sly & robbie meet the mad professor

RAS Records are delighted to announce that the first ever album release to feature Sly and Robbie, Mad Professor and Dean Fraser “The Dub Revolutionaries” has been nominated for Best Reggae Album at the 2005 GRAMMY Awards. This is also the first time ever that a completely instrumental dub album has earned a Grammy nomination. The award ceremony is due to be held on February 13th, 2005 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Says Gary Himelfarb of RAS Records, “Sly and Robbie, since the 1970s, have been synonymous with dub. Recognized worldwide as the “rhythm twins” they are not only musical innovators, but as session musicians have backed the top recording artists in the music industry.

With “Dub Revolutionaries” recognition as the first ever all instrumental dub record to earn a Grammy nomination, it only solidifies the fact that Sly and Robbie are still a musical tour de force and that the Mad Professor continues to produce music that is at the cutting edge of creative and quality dub.”

Over on this side of the Atlantic, Neil Fraser (aka Mad Professor) of Ariwa Sounds comments how “it's very significant that an album that is produced here in the UK has enters the GRAMMY nominations. However, it is extremely ironic that this album has hardly had any radio plays or profile here in the UK, but has sold very well in the USA”. Looking to the future, the Mad Professor expresses how “we should re-examine our plays policies, and conclude whether the rest of the world is out of tune with the UK, or the UK needs to be in tune with the world markets".

About Sly and Robbie and “Dub Revolutionaries”

Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare have been the driving force behind literally hundreds of thousands of songs since they first partnered up in Jamaica in 1975 with their distinctive drum and bass rhythms. Aside from working with nearly every reggae act in existence, the duo has also recorded with Grace Jones, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger and Herbie Hancock, and scored big with a mainstream hit of their own in the late ‘80s, “(Boops) Here To Go.” As a production team, the pair has been on the cutting edge of modern dub, ragga, pop, and dancehall throughout their 30-year career, and won a GRAMMY for Friends in 1998. On The Dub, the collaboration with the brilliant reggae mix master the Mad Professor, Sly & Robbie demonstrate their decades earned talent playing instrumental dub music live and direct to tape. The Dub Revolutionaries was recorded at the Mad Professor’s legendary Ariwa studios in London in homage to the ‘70s era analog sound that was popularized in Philadelphia soul music.

The 47th Annual GRAMMY Awards will be held on Sunday, Feb. 13, at Staples Center in Los Angeles and once again will be broadcast live (details to follow). GRAMMY ballots for the final round of voting will be mailed on Dec. 15 to the voting members of The Recording Academy. They are due back to the accounting firm of Deloitte by Jan. 12, 2005, when they will be tabulated and the results kept secret until the telecast.
